Spiral Q’s Education Initiative program seeks to create evocative art-making workshops for underserved Philadelphia communities with limited access to the arts. Using cardboard, paint and papier mache, these workshops teach puppetry arts in a way in which all skill levels can participate in a meaningful way.

The Initiative’s programs culminate in parades, pageants and performances where people of all different communities create an event expressing identity and reinforcing civic pride. Although the workshops take place mostly in schools, they are open for nursing homes, mental health programs and other adult populations.

Spiral Q is looking for individuals who would like to get involved in the education initiatives.
To volunteer, contact Chloe: chloe@spiralq.org or call the office: 215-222-6979.

The Initiatives include residencies by Spiral Q staff who work on-site, and the culmination of the residency is a student-led pageant. This research and arts learning-centered program offers a creative outlet to students, giving them a voice to convey the messages important to them. It enhances their communication and leadership skills as well as their self-esteem. Exposing students and participants to career possibilities in the Arts through site visits to foundries, movie set production houses, and a variety of community-based arts organizations around the City is an important and popular component.

Spring 2008
Spiral Q's staff has expanded to include five teaching artists to lead residencies in schools across the city. These artists' backgrounds range from sculpture to painting to movement, and they are itching to get involved in your communities and classrooms.

During the 2007-2008 school year, Spiral Q teaching artists engaged students with artistic residencies at Huey School, Lea Elementary, the Norris Square Civic Association's after-school program at McKinley Elementary, Feltonville Intermediate, J.S. Jenks School, Reynolds and Vaux Schools, and the Communities in Schools (CIS) Initiatives at Peirce and William Dick Schools.

Do you want to get your classroom involved in Spiral Q's Education Initiatives? Contact the Q's Education Director Ted Enoch at tedenoch@spiralq.org or call him at the office: 215.222.6979.
